The Shape of Our Future

Who will shape our future?  Who will dream a wild thought that will transform all of our lives?  Who will lead our next revolutions?  To better answer these questions, we must explore our innermost selves – that place where each and every one of us has an ability to imagine, create, and contribute.  That place is where dreams are born and reality emerges in the form of inspiration!

True inspiration ignites passions that are unstoppable.  Every one of us possesses the capacity to transform lives or processes in a manner that can be considered profound ─ whether on a grand scale or to a single process or life of an individual ─ and as a result, alter the very purpose of our own life in doing so.

puzzle, peices, random, inspiring
So, roll up your sleeves and take an honest assessment of the things you can do to make an impact.  What are your gifts?  What do you have in terms of natural ability that you can “lend” to the process?  Your action will put forces into play that’ll ultimately inspire others, even if it’s just one person.  Your action will have an impact!

The universal law of nature rewards the spirit of giving.  So give judiciously - not just when it’s convenient, but especially when it’s most needed.  Those on the receiving end of our generosity are affected in ways more broadly than any of us can imagine.  I’ve seen it, experienced it, and lived it from both sides.  The rewards are rich and life-changing.

So how do we make an impact?  It’s often as simple as finding a need and filling it.  Are you artistic?  Then seek to share your talent and open the eyes of others through the medium of paint or music.  Do you write?  Then write passionately with inspiring words of encouragement to those who need it.  Do you have time to spare?  Volunteer.  Are you successful?  Then share your story with others on how they too can follow the principles of success.  Mentor a student.  All of these and so many more examples can be the catalyst that serves as the critical pivot point and makes the difference in someone’s life that leads to profound changes.  The changes can save a life, a community, or even the world – it’s not unrealistic to envision if you open the aperture of your mind and admit to the plausibility.  In the absence of immediate ideas, simply offer a compliment or a gesture of encouragement to someone.  Make it anonymous if you can – a note or a small gift can make a profound difference and lead to positive change for someone in need.

What an honor it is to be part of the process that ignites the dream of another.  You don’t have to be a psychologist or counselor.  You don’t even have to have the right words.  You just have to be sincere.  Your sincerity will convey - even without words.

So, open your eyes and watch for the opportunities to reveal themselves.  Then step forward and witness the change in two lives – theirs…and yours!

Until next time!

Dreams...

Dreams…

Grab your favorite beverage and pull up a chair, because we’re gonna chat about something that’s as elusive a topic as it gets ─ even more so than, say, politics or whether or not alien life really exists.  Note: It’s no accident that I mention politics and alien life in the same sentence, but that’s a totally different topic altogether…unless, of course, the elements of your latest dream had something to do with both ─ which is completely plausible in this day and age.

Okay, take a moment to think about the last dream you had.  If you’re like most, that may be a daunting task.  While we’re typically able to recall remnants of our dreams, rarely are we able to fully recall enough of a dream to “put the pieces back together,” so to speak.  Depending on the encounter, we may recall random glimpses of what occurred during a dream that we quickly discount as “weird or bizarre.”

Human thought exists on several layers or aspect planes.  Loosely defined, our minds operate in three dimensions: the conscious, the subconscious, and the alter-conscious.  It is the alter-conscious plane where dreams principally occur, and the one aspect that is the most elusive and difficult dimension to define.  All three dimensions freely interact with one another and have some level of affect or influence on each other.

A great deal of focus has been given to the study and science (both psychological and physiological) of our dreams.  Because of our cognitive limitations, we're not yet able to fully understand how to control and/or manipulate our dreams.  Therefore, like the early pioneers of our existence, we do the best we can by assigning meaning and interpretation through symbology and conjecture.

An understanding of dream symbology requires a delicate approach and an admission that this too is not an all-inclusive or absolute method of clearly defining that which still eludes us.  With every attempt to increase the wisdom of our understanding through symbolic reference, we must be open to the likely possibility that we are simply wrong.  After all, symbolism is not an all-encompassing approach that is universally applicable to a population of those who dream of common symbols.  That said, this “uncharted territory,” is a rich forum for unbridled opinions, insights, theories, and interpretations ─ all of which lend themselves, albeit in an eclectic manner, to the advancement of our understanding of a fascinating aspect of the human psyche.

One of the methods used to understand dream symbology is a practice called amplification.  Amplification is a process of focusing on the remnant elements of a dream that we’re readily able to recall.  Those elements are analyzed as symbols that are associated with similar elements and circumstances we have come to know through the knowledge, wisdom, and interactivity of life.  In other words, we associate the alter-conscious with the conscious…the unknown with the known…in much the same way we do with virtually any science or process of discovery.

It has always intrigued me to listen to someone describe a dream they have had.  From a listener’s perspective, we associate only our own symbolic visual, emotional, and psychological references while listening.  We can never truly enjoy a first-hand account of another person’s dream…unless of course, we’re paired with them in the same dream.  Yes, that has been known to happen.  See?  I told you this could go in virtually any direction. We’ll save that for another time however.

Suffice it to say, our dreams, as elusive as they may appear to be, have a purpose.  That purpose is, in large part, a deeply personal process that I believe offers infinite possibilities of insight and introspection ─ both of which can increase knowledge, wisdom and spiritual acuity.

What are your dreams telling you?  Are they a mere reflection of your conscious life?  If so, do they offer insight on the state of your life…opportunity, warning, assurance?  Carefully analyzed, do they reveal a hidden nature previously unknown and plausibly possible, yet to be discovered?

Drop me a line and share the experience of your dreams.  And don’t be concerned about how bizarre it may sound.  We’re principally looking for signs and symbols.  In fairness, I’ll be the first to disclose one of mine.  For some reason, the major themes of my dreams seem to be most closely associated with maneuver, conflict, weapons, driving, and water.

Walking down a dusty street, minding my own business, I was approached by a man.  He had a sinister sense and directed me to sit at a table at the edge of the road.  I sat, curious as to what he wanted.  He placed a hammer on the table.  I took it as a threat.  He confirmed the threat and told me I was to go with him to be interrogated.  I looked around to assess the situation and saw that there were other men behind me.  Several thoughts ran through my mind…what information would I divulge?  What were my escape and evade options?  The dream “warped” (dreams tend to move quickly sometimes, going from one scene/experience to the next) and I was with an unknown ally.  We were hiding from a pursuer and were forced to make a decision to jump off a rooftop into a body of water...

The dream elements became sketchy after that, as they often do.  But there were the typical elements of maneuver, conflict, weapons, water, and even some kind of vehicle in the end.  Chew on that and let me know what YOU think!

Embrace the experience of your dreams!

Until next time!

What is a Lifetime?

What is a Lifetime?

How do you define a “lifetime?”  The very nature of the question leads most of us to believe the answer to equate to some undetermined lengthy span of time. We choose to believe in averages that we are somehow entitled to live until we are “old age”, whatever that means. But most of us know that isn’t always the case. In fact, a wise friend once told me…

“No one promised you tomorrow.”

Unless you’ve experienced a personal loss or endured a significant emotional event of some kind recently, the precarious nature of life is not something you have likely given much thought to.  After all, why would you or why should you? Why contemplate something that’s essentially out of our control?

We live and plan our lives as if we’ll be around to see all of our hopes, desires, and ambitions take shape and materialize.  We don’t generally have any great sense of urgency to speak of because, after all, there’s always tomorrow.  But, what if…

What if you just received news that, for some reason, the definition (and fragility) of a lifetime suddenly becomes brutally apparent? Think of the twenty-something who just received a dreaded diagnosis of cancer.  Or the wife who is expecting her husband to arrive home from work, only to learn that he died in a car accident on the way home. The news crushes like a ton of bricks and affects not only the recipient but virtually everyone connected to them—family, friends, co-workers. It’s enough of a significant emotional event to force an unavoidable breath-taking pause in the pace of life. These are the moments that force us to recognize that there is indeed a period at the end of this journey we call life. Plans suddenly become unimportant. Petty differences no longer matter. The only thing that suddenly matters is to plug the emotion crater that exists in the pit of the soul.

Throughout the timeline of life, there are reminders that the brevity of a lifetime is an undeniable aspect of our existence. We watch in awe the miracle of birth, celebrate birthdays and accomplishments, cry at weddings, and endure tragedy and misfortune along the way. Oftentimes we ignore the overt hints provided to us to help us recognize how truly precious and fragile our lifetime is, and to take account of just how we’re spending the timeline of our own lives. The question then becomes, are we listening?

No matter how you personally define the term, a lifetime is dealt to each and every one of us disproportionately. We are left to accept—like it or not—that the timeline somehow aligns with God’s master plan.

Your Call to Action

The purpose of this article is to remind us all that, no matter how we define it, the end of a lifetime is not ours to control. However, what we do and how we choose to live the life we do have is totally and emphatically up to us.  So…wake up!  Look around you and allow the nuances of life to permeate all of your senses. See color where you once failed to recognize it. Breathe in fragrances that make you smile or bring you to a place of spiritual harmony and balance. Listen to sounds that you’ve previously tuned out. Discover the essence of your inner self, where true peace, knowledge, wisdom, and understanding exist.

It is true that we can have, be, do, and become anything we desire in our lifetimes. We have only to desire, and then to act, in order to project the purpose we choose for our lives. What a tragedy it would be for us to reach the end of our life knowing that we lived below our potential or failed to offer kindness or love in a manner that truly matches the intent and desire of our innermost selves. Don’t be that person. Instead, live each moment, appreciate the now, hold close the people you love and tell them how you feel. Be passionate and passion will resonate in every facet of your life. Become something or someone you truly know you are capable of becoming.  Reach deep and reignite the vision. Don’t put it off until tomorrow because no one promised you tomorrow. Seek divine guidance and wisdom and it will seek you.

Until next time!

Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins of Self-Destruction

Assuming you’ve read at least one of my many previous blogs, you know I typically write from a broad perspective that opens the aperture of understanding, allowing a reader to see more of a topic, and in doing so, to see that topic a bit clearer.  I’ve decided to do something different this time by breaking a topic down into bite-sized pieces, effectively presenting a “how-to” approach on a very important topic – You.

It’s been said that real change happens slow, and typically comes with a price.  Although that’s generally a true statement, I believe it’s more acceptably and accurately stated by saying that real change happens methodically, and that the associated price can be one that’s enjoyed, rather than paid.  Make no mistake, there is a price.  But wouldn’t it be much better to enjoy that price than to dread it?  It's as simple as turning the bill of your hat from the back to the front in terms of the way we look at the cost of making changes in our life.  I’ll take the hit for the oversimplified, positive but honest spin, because I believe it portrays a point-of-view so many of us need to hear.  I mean, don’t we hear enough negative spin anyway?

This article can be applied universally across a wide spectrum of personal circumstances and personality types.  It was written to address attributes and behaviors that, if applied, will yield noticeable change.  Avoid these seven “sins” and your life will begin to take shape in ways that will surprise you.

1. Envy – You are unique!  Capitalize on it.  One of the very first things we should do to initiate change is to take stock of who we are, and own it!  One of the best ways to do that is to avoid envy.  Envy blinds us to the true nature of who we are as individuals.  Each and every one of us possesses the ability to discover ourselves through honest introspection or self-discovery.  If we turn our focus away from others and take the time to conduct an honest self assessment of our own unique talents and abilities, we begin to see things about ourselves that reveal the core of our true joy.  The experience of self-discovery will change your life!  Unfortunately, most of us get so caught up in this thing we call “routine,” which serves only to rob us of the awesome revelation of the gifts and talents that lie just beyond the thin veil of our own discovery.
2. Apathy – One of the biggest causes of apathy or laziness can be blamed on convenience.  Simple societal conveniences have convinced us over the years that things should be easy.  It’s true that technology has made our lives easier in many ways, but the universal rules that govern personal change requires a willingness to step out of our comfort zones and instill a belief in our personal ability to remain dedicated to the very changes we seek.  A change in our psychological, physiological, emotional, or financial circumstances takes time, dedication and action.  If you’ve read this far, you’re doing great, because you’ve taken action in the form of education in order to make a change.  Continue your momentum by stepping away from the television where you watch everyone else succeed, and instead, begin your own path to success.  Avoid the obstacles that drain you and keep you from what you truly desire.

3. Pride – You should be proud of who you are and what you’ve accomplished in life.  Recognize, however, that you don’t know everything nor can you do everything alone.  If your pride prevents you from seeking help, insight, or valuable feedback from outside sources, it should be readjusted or completely set aside to allow for effective change to occur.  Recognize your weaknesses and don’t be afraid to seek help from relevant sources that will propel you forward.  And when you do reach an achievement or effect real change, refuse to allow your pride to swell to an egotistical arrogance.  Pride, unlike other sins, can serve to bolster confidence if a delicate balance is maintained.  Once imbalance occurs, a readjustment will be necessary.

4. Greed – Real change will affect several areas and layers of your life.  To seek change for the sole purpose of an increase of your financial status is a poorly-designed motive that’s typically doomed to fail from the start.  The silver screen’s Gordon Gecko tells us that “Greed is good.”  While that mantra can be debated, greed – in and of itself – typically carries a negative connotation that places the focus on what should be a result instead of element or action that produces a result.  Simply stated, it’s better to focus on a personal trait or behavioral change that will result in an eventual increase in prosperity.  Another note concerning greed…instead of greed, choose instead to be charitable, generous, and kind.  That which you push forward will return to you in similar fashion.  Sow the seeds of generosity and life will return the favor in more ways than you can imagine.

5. Anger – Control your emotions.  Every one of us occupies a position in life that is unique in its circumstance, and, for the most part, is a direct or indirect reflection of the decisions or choices we’ve made to this very moment.  That’s not to say that life doesn’t throw a bad card our way every now and then.  In those instances, we must play the hand we’ve been dealt by doing the best we can.  Yet, the result of how we play that hand requires us to make more decisions on how best to handle them…which will determine the course our lives take from that moment.  If you’ve been thrust into a circumstance or you don’t like your situation or the direction your life is taking, don’t get angry.  Instead, change it – make different decisions and choices…and make them often enough to affect the change you desire.  You’re not entitled to “more” or “different” simply out of fairness, so don’t waste your time and energy getting angry.  Be honest with yourself and decide what you’re willing to give to change your circumstances.  Then, put forth your very best and follow through…consistently!  Step forth in confidence, knowing that new decisions bring new results.

6. Lust – What’s your weakness?  Exotic cars?  Jewelry?  Electronics?  Real estate?  Travel?  All of these things are completely acceptable elements that are a natural part of the reward or results process.  Be careful, however, not to allow the veil of lust to cloud your judgment on what is truly valuable in life.  Because, in the end, “things” don’t define a person.  What truly matters in the end are the lives we touch along the way and the lasting impressions we make on someone just because we can.  Relationships and happiness are everlasting.  Things rust, break, and fade away.

7. Gluttony – It’s true that a well-balanced life can produce a level of prosperity that allows for some degree of  indulgence.  Indulgence in its most innocuous form can be healthy and can serve to modify or reward decisions that lead to positive, empowering personal changes.  However, indulgence taken to extremes can lead to gluttony and destructive behaviors that become personally harmful to you and those around you.  In extreme circumstances, gluttony can lead to corruptive behavior that is difficult to escape.  Avoid gluttony.  Instead, look for ways to share the results of your good fortune through education, philanthropy, or charitable endeavors.

There you have it - The Seven Deadly Sins of Self-Destruction.  Avoid them to make your life easier and to affect real change.  Learn from them to make better decisions about the course you want your life to take.

Until next time!

What's on Your Slate?

What are You Writing on Your Slate?

In the not so distant past, teachers used chalkboards as a primary means of conveying academic information to students.  The chalkboard was originally constructed from slate stone; hence the term slate.  Students would gather information written by the teacher on the chalkboard, commit it to memory, and begin the learning process.  This foundational means of delivery provided the impetus of what we now term as original programming or primary education.

Each of us has a perspective of life that we have formed over time using experiences as our primary source of education.  Much like foundational academia, life’s experiences are written on our internal slates and form the basis of our opinions, attitudes, biases, and the overall perspective we carry that governs the way our lives are principally shaped.  The real secret to this analogy is that our slate can be updated, changed or re-programmed.  This is to say, that we’re very much in control of what we decide to write on our slate.  After all, a chalkboard was designed to be written upon, erased, and re-written upon.

All too often, we allow the currents of life to take us places we’d rather not be.  We get caught up in circumstances and complain about not having enough time or energy to accomplish the things we’d rather be doing in life.  The most common cause can often be attributed to how we’ve programmed our minds with what we’ve written on our “slates.”

What have you written on your slate?  Does it accurately project the elements or principles you embrace?  And do those elements support the desired direction of your life?

The cliché “clean slate” is typically used to infer an erasure of the old, outdated manner of thinking that tends to erode and stifle personal growth and obscure opportunity.  A clean slate makes room for new terms or elements that can be written to increase perspective, abundance, opportunity, and personal growth.  Don’t be afraid to erase your slate and update it with new elements that speak to the goals and aspirations you truly desire.

So pull out your slate, dust it off, erase the routine, negative,  ineffective elements, and start today with new elements that speak to the core of who you want to become…who you choose to be…and how you want to start living your life today!  Check your slate often.  Commit the elements to memory.  Allow them to become a part of you.  Live by them.  Defend them.  And watch your life transform as the new things you have written on your slate become reality.

Until next time!

Excellence without Excuses

Excellence without Excuses

It’s said that we truly define ourselves by our actions.  If that holds true, then we wear our identities on our sleeves.  Most of us are taught at a very young age that we can accomplish anything in life as long as we try hard enough.  Why is it, then, that somewhere along the lines of life, some accept mediocrity while others strive for excellence?

Aristotle once wrote,
“We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit.”

It holds true, then, that excellence can be considered a result of doing the right thing consistently, or doing things right often enough to produce an excellent result.  You see, not all habits carry negative connotations.

Excellence is a mindset.  It’s a set of personal ideals that define an image of oneself and the lifestyle they demand for and of themselves.  It’s an elusive term to succinctly define, yet, it is most certainly recognized when it reveals itself.

Excellence is a personal quest to better oneself through self-discipline.  It requires consistency, follow-through and the elimination of all excuses.  “Tasks” become “steps,”  “obstacles” become “elements,” and “I can’t” becomes “I will.”

Excellence is born by a decision and driven by a vision of purpose and determination.  Setbacks, failures, obstacles, and diversions fall by the wayside and are considered elements of a rite of passage reserved for the few who learn to recognize them for the value they hold on the path to excellence.

Excellence can be obtained if we care more than others think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, and expect more than others think is possible.

The achievement of excellence defines an elevated personal standard that, once realized, is not easily forgotten.  It is proud but not boastful, it is difficult but not risky, and it is often elusive but not impossible.

The question arises, therefore, on whether the desire for excellence resides within us all or just those few who are determined to exploit it.  If it resides in but a select few, what makes them different from us?  Or…do we all have the seed of excellence within ourselves?  If we all have the seed of excellence, as I believe we do, what is it that compels some to embrace it while others do not?  Could it be that excellence requires more from us in order to achieve it?  Think about it.  Excellence, by design, is awarded to those who…

…care more than others think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, and expect more than others think is possible.

One more thing that excellence requires of us is to “do more" than most others are willing to do in order to achieve it.

Some things to keep in mind as you pursue excellence…

Recognize that the ability to achieve excellence resides in and with you!  It can be achieved if you apply the principles described earlier – care more, risk more, dream more, expect more, and do more!

Step out of your comfort zone!  The warm embrace and safety of familiarity and routine are traps that keep us suspended in the status quo.  Accept comfort and you’ll watch the world go by.  Refuse it and join the ranks of those collecting the most from life.   When you look back upon it all from the perch of excellence you’ll see with clarity that ordinary comfort doesn’t come close to living up to its hype.  In fact, you’ll find that the achievement of excellence often brings about a quality of life that provides a level of comfort unmatched by ordinary measures.

SEE yourself in an excellent situation!  The mind cannot distinguish conscious reality from subconscious reality.  Visualize yourself achieving excellence in the manner that best suits you.  Mentally place yourself in the best of situations and bring reality to your doorstep through creative vision.

Practice your pursuits relentlessly!  Consistency and repetition produce results.  Your competition will practice, study, train, build, and work hard.  You must simply do more in order to achieve excellence.

Make NO EXCUSES!  You have the time, the resources, the determination, and the ability to achieve excellence.  Granted, you may have to get creative in order to formulate your plan, but you already know the alternative of doing nothing.

Tap into the things that DRIVE you!  Make a promise to yourself, starting NOW, that you’ll commit to doing whatever it takes to get up, take action, get up again when you stumble, drive through inevitable obstacles and setbacks, and follow-through until you can see your excellence coming into view on the horizon.  Feel determination well within you when you first catch your glimpse of excellence.  Then take a breath, reach out and grab your excellence!  Claim it.  Savor it.  Celebrate it.  And never forget how you feel as you step into the company of those who, like you, have tasted the victory of excellence!

Until next time!
