Overcome the Fear of Failure

What is it that drives you, motivates you, and compels you to do something…to become something greater than who you currently are? Every one of you reading this wants to do something, build something, or experience something more in life. Some of you are already out there doing it. For those who aren’t, what’s holding you back? Chances are, your limitations are defined by an underlying fear of some kind. For most, this fear presents itself as one of the most menacing and intimidating fearful accomplices—the fear of failure.

So there you are, faced with an opportunity to try something new, to seize the moment that will fundamentally change your life as you know it. There is no apparent reason to avoid going “all-in” and fully immerse yourself in the promises that await. Yet, you hesitate, despite everything begging you to take advantage of the opportunity. What’s that about anyway?

The fear of failure robs more people from experiencing an elevated lifestyle than most any other form of physiological or psychological obstacle or distraction. Authorities often refer to this as “getting in your own way.” Well, what if there was a method to get out of your own way? Turns out there are actually several things you can do to virtually eliminate this fear. Let’s explore 4 of them.

Your First Time

Think of the first time you accomplished something. It could be anything. It doesn’t really matter if it’s something recent or something from your past. The first time you drove a car to the first day on the job to the first time you attempt most anything, you are unfamiliar with just what it is you’re in for.

The lack of familiarity and uncertainty can be a rather fearful experience. When faced with uncertainty, our mind quickly jumps into protection mode and “warns” us of the potential ways we would be better off not following through. “What if you fail?” “What if you get injured?” “What if you lose money or credibility?” These kinds of questions are all indicators of a fundamental fear of failure. However, chances are you did not have that same level of fear and apprehension the second and subsequent times you actually took action, unless you actually did fail miserably at your first attempt. Why? Because you’ve…

Been There, Done That!

Uncertainty affects us more than the fear of failure. That’s right, the fear of failure is actually the result of your unfamiliarity, which is directly associated with inexperience. So, the fundamental solution to a lack of familiarity is to find ways to overcome this aspect of fear. Find a way to expose yourself to the experience of whatever it is you fear. If you want to start a business but are afraid of what it may take, try to find a business you can launch while you’re still able to keep your day job and pay your bills. If you want t learn to swim…you’ve got to get in the water. Just don’t get in over your head (metaphor intended).

Once you have “been there, done that,” the task takes on an entirely different perspective as you become familiar with the various ways you can control, operate, or manipulate the situation. The result is typically a set of (familiar) circumstances that gradually begin to empower you as the fear of failure subsides.

Compared to Who?

Have you ever watched from the “sidelines” of life and wondered, “If she can do it, I can certainly do it as well, if not better”? Take a look around and watch those who have succeeded in whatever area you wish to accomplish and ask yourself what it took for them to succeed. Chances are, you’ll eventually see little difference beyond the fact that they were able to succeed despite facing some of the very same fears you now face. The truth is, most of these people have no special advantage outside their ability to face the fear and do it anyway. You can do the same.

How many times have you seen ordinary people do extraordinary things? It actually happens a lot more than we readily care to admit. We pause in awe at their accomplishments while wondering just how they managed to do what they do best. The sad truth in this is, we rarely ever see the hours of preparation, the struggles, and the defeats or setbacks they encounter along the way. These things are what make ordinary people extraordinary. They are typical circumstances in the quest to become someone, to experience more.

Better than the Alternative

I have always had a fondness for the victory I experience after acting in the face of fear and doubt. I particularly enjoy it when I follow-through on something most other people are afraid of doing. But it’s not so much about them as it is me when it comes to overcoming the fear of failure.

“You can have, do, or be anything you want in this life as long as you’re willing to help enough other people get what they want.” ~ Zig Ziglar

Some of my greatest accomplishments have come despite the fear of failure. To mitigate that fear, I do everything I can to consider the choices facing me. I analyze, evaluate, and prepare according to the situation that presents itself. Most of the time I have only the bare minimum of information, but it’s typically enough to provide the gut check I need to act. Then, I act…and adjust as necessary. The strategy has served me well throughout most of my life. Perhaps you can give it try.

What if something is (seemingly) so hard, it simply doesn’t feel worth it to pursue? Well, quitting is the easy option, but completely robbing yourself of the chance to try is tragic. The real truth is, we are all going to die one day. Wouldn’t it be better knowing you tried rather than dying with the burden of regret? I know many good person who has expressed the pain of regret on a myriad of missed opportunities along the path of their lives. I don’t plan to be among them when my number comes up. How about you?

Until Next Time...

Proud to Announce My New Partnership

With Writer

Elisabeth Auld

Writers write because we are called to do so. We write because we are driven to tell a story, prescribe a theory, formula, or fact. We write what we see, feel, sense, and believe. We do this whether we receive accolades, acknowledgement, or anonymity. We’re seldom long satisfied with the completion of our work as we continue to heed the call of the next thought, idea, or inspiration.

I believe we all have a story…each and every one of us. And while some choose to keep that story to themselves, writers are compelled to empty their hearts and minds to eliquate, elaborate, and articulate the messages and narratives that must be written. Such is the case with the writers whom I have had the distinct honor and privilege to get to know on a personal level. One such writer is longtime friend and former Air Force colleague, Elisabeth Auld, who writes a periodical blog entitled...
Gals in Blue.

Elisabeth is a retired US Air Force full-bird Colonel (translation: she was one small step away from the rank of General) whose style of leadership inspired the loyalty of those who followed her and the attention and respect of those who worked alongside her. She is a Naval Warfare College graduate and has garnered several military honors, awards, and decorations. She is the creator and chief contributor to Gals in Blue, a blog principally focused on issues and interests related to a woman’s perspective of serving in the military, although she is known to cover a variety of other topics that catches her interest as well.

It is an honor and a privilege to affiliate with Elisabeth and her wise, knowledgeable, and often entertaining perspectives inside the edition of Gals in Blue. I encourage you to visit her blog and leave a comment or become a follower. I look forward to the new writing connection partnership as we reach an even broader audience together!

The YouEconomy

If you haven’t noticed recently, we are entering a brand new economic era. Why should you care? Because it is affecting the way you’ve been accustom to functioning in a traditional economy. Disruption is at the doorstep. And while change is not necessarily inherently good or bad, it is inevitable.

Our role in any economic system is multi-dimensional. As consumers, we have adapted to change over the years through the migration of carrying cash, credit cards, and writing checks to the comprehensive and virtual access of a dynamic economy through our smart phone, personal computer, or tablet. Even that model is changing right before our very eyes. If you’re slow to adapt, you’re falling behind.

Things “seem” different because they are different. There is a global movement underfoot taking place that is reshaping the process of commerce and business, from the manner in which we acquire goods and services to the way we pay for them. This movement is driving a totally new economic mindset of innovators who have taken the concept of disruptive change to the next level. These people are reshaping the traditional paradigm of the very manner in which goods and services are traditionally provided and are learning new skills that drive a wedge into the “old” way of doing business.

     Introducing, the YouEconomy

“You are the creator of your own destiny.”
                                                    ~ G. Westfal

The YouEconomy is driven by a resourceful network of people who have taken the future of work into their own hands by sharing resources, ideas, and technology to drive change through innovation. This movement is creating a new wave of entrepreneurs who are redesigning the economic system around the consumer for the benefit of…everyone.
These innovators have abandoned traditional brick-and-mortar offices and cubicle farms for professions and conditions that better align with their passions.  As a result, the friendships they are creating, the people they are meeting, the places they are seeing, and the quality of life they are leading have enriched their lives far beyond even what they thought was possible. They are living life by their standards, doing what they love, earning what they want, and perhaps for the first time in a generation, discovering the very essence of job satisfaction.

Emerging technology has taken financial power from the few and has delivered it to you, me, and everyone else formerly left out of the privilege loop. For the first time since the days when most Americans were farmers, the vast majority of us can now be self-reliant for income. This is a beautiful thing, especially as more and more of the new economic models allow us grasp the power of passive income.

The Innovators

Although Millennials are currently the largest demographic of the YouEconomy, others outside this group of innovators have taken notice and have begun to experience the benefits this opportunity provides. In fact, over 30 percent of the self-employed population in America is aged 55 or older. The diversity among age and race is also broad and indiscriminate, thereby making the demographics far broader and more eclectic than the traditional economy.

The YouEconomy is dynamic. That is to say, it is not easily defined. Often referred to as the sharing economy, on-demand economy, gig economy, and freelance economy, it has provide a wide range of opportunities to those seeking to experience more in terms of what they have to offer to society.

The broad spectrum of opportunities range from peer-to-peer modernized network marketing models to independent contractors, micro-entrepreneurs, and moonlighters. Every one of these categories are wide open to anyone wishing to become part of this new economic model without regard to traditional educational considerations.

“The major determinant is attitude. When someone believes they can do it, almost in some supernatural way it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.”
                                   ~ Paul Zane Pilzer, Economist

The Opportunity

Despite the movement, a great majority of people still insist on clinging to the traditional definition and mindset of “work and career”. And, by most accounts, those people are among the most dissatisfied. As previously stated, the YouEconomy provides an opportunity to escape the current reality and to experience a life chock full of possibilities, the likes of which are limited only by your own initiative, imagination, attitude, and tenacity.

“If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.”
                                                               ~ Richard Branson

If you should find yourself contemplating the possibilities of what lies beyond your current line of work—something that will bring you into alignment with a passion or purpose—pay close attention to the opportunities that present themselves. These opportunities may be just what you’re looking for in terms of joining…the YouEconomy.

Until next time…

Don't Buy the Hype!

Six Universal Truths to Finding Your Purpose

Do you ever feel like today's most successful super achievers know something you don't?

If your answer is "yes" you're partly correct. But today you have an opportunity to learn, borrow, and apply the strategies used by most leaders to get ahead of literally everyone else.

Let’s face it, most of the success and achievement advice you read today is crap because it is typically written by someone with an agenda to sell you something that sounds good on paper. The reason we see so much of it is because of the insatiable appetite for an “easy” road to wealth and a prosperity that exists exclusively among those who seek to claim their version of success.

While we say we desire success and achievement, most people have no idea how to go about finding it, so they end up relying on someone else to show them the “magic” formula. The only problem with that approach is most people end up buying (literally) someone else’s version of success, oftentimes without regard to whether that version truly works at all in the first place.  Besides, there really is no magic in the formula for success. Yet, we continue to seek “the magic” while ignoring the simple reality that success and achievement comes down to a few simple universal laws of nature.

1. Define success on your own terms.

If you’re going to achieve success in any form, it must be personally defined and reside squarely in the lane of your passion and purpose. If it does not, continue looking. Don’t get frustrated because you haven’t discovered it…yet. If you honestly and earnestly seek, you will find your purpose…and whatever else you seek in life for that matter.

“Seek and ye shall find.” ~ The Bible

2. Take Action.

Once you discover that one thing that drives you, pursue it with a vengeance! Take action to learn everything you can to master your purpose. Take action to reprioritize your life to bring your purpose to the forefront while reducing and eliminating everything that is counterproductive to the perfection of your purpose.  Take action to feed your purpose with your time, money, and resources. If you neglect this step you will fail.

3. Find a vehicle.

Unless you can think of something that has yet to be invented then it’s a safe bet that there is a vehicle or system that already exists to support your passion or purpose. You don’t have to reinvent the Internet to succeed in your lane of purpose. Find a system, organization, company, investor, or mentor to align yourself with to begin your journey.

4. Create or tap into a network.

Nobody accomplishes everything by themselves in isolation. The most successful among us know how to coalesce and leverage the talents, strengths, resources, and efforts of other people in the pursuit of a goal or objective. The most successful do it better than the rest. Richard Branson, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Cheryl Sandberg, and others like these highly successful people rely on a team or a network of others to achieve a common vision or objective resulting in extraordinary success. You can do the very same thing if you engage with the right network of people. Doing so leverages your resources while systematically reducing your timeline to achievement.

5. Stay sharp!

Successful people pride themselves on being the best. They are very often considered to be an expert or authority in their chosen purpose. The very best way to accomplish this is to employ every principle above and…to stay mentally and physically fit. Sitting in front of the computer or TV all day won’t cut it, so get off your butt and do something for your personal fitness and overall wellness. A regular fitness regimen keeps our body in shape and our mind supplied with oxygen while releasing the endorphins that stimulate imagination and creativity.

6. Be consistent.

It is inevitable that, from time to time, discouragement, doubt, and fear will rear its ugly head along your journey to success. Recognize these occurrences as the obstacles they are and remain consistent. Power through it, find solutions, and never, ever quit! Your ability to get through these times is the difference-maker in terms of those who do and those who dream.  Quitting assures your failure while consistency rewards your efforts to remain committed to your passion.

So, while you may have previously believed that some people know something you don’t, the truth is, they no longer do. The real truth is that you can have, be, do, or become anything you desire…as long as you are willing to act on a few simple rules…the same rules that are now in the hands of an achiever—you!
Until next time…

Live a Life of Integrity

Do you have Integrity? What does integrity mean, anyway? Even the most educated among us have some difficulty answering that question without a slight reflective pause. In other words, integrity isn’t something that’s easily defined. Yet all manner of respected leaders across the spectrum—clergy, businessmen and women, motivational speakers, mentors, and true leaders alike—lead with integrity as one of the foremost recognizable traits. Perhaps one of the best, most succinct definitions of integrity is from C.S Lewis, who said…

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”

Integrity is a personal code of honor, most often captured or recognized by no one other than yourself. Therein lies the beauty of integrity. You see, integrity is, by design, something only you can define and only when you put it into actual practice. In other words, it’s not so much about what you say, but about what you do that matters most.

If who you are matches what you say, then your life will exude the tenets of integrity. The key is to speak less and just BE more. And when you speak, do so with compassion, sincerity, and truth. These elements will lay the groundwork for integrity to resonate throughout your life and be evidenced in all you do.

One of the most essential elements in business is trust. Trust begins with integrity. So what does integrity look like? Actually, positive examples—by design—are difficult to spot. It is less difficult to spot someone without a high degree of integrity. We all know at least one. They’re the ones who refuse to accept responsibility for their actions. These people are quick to accept accolades or rewards and even quicker at deflection or justification when things don’t go as planned.

Here are some ways you can build your integrity. Consider putting some of these principles into practice as you strive to become better and experience more of the richness of life and to positively affect others along the way…

Keep Your Promises – Do whatever you can to follow through. If you make a statement or a declaration, follow through. If you cannot, own up to it, apologize, and move on. Just don’t make it a habit or it too will become part of you and erode the very element of integrity you are trying to build.

Keep your Appointments – Before you make a commitment, consider whether or not you are realistically able to follow through. This one area alone affects so many things from leading affectively to personal health and fitness commitments you make to yourself. The value (and practice) of your time integrity creates expectations that will either accelerate or totally derail your reputation.

Pick up the Trash – I was walking down an empty hallway in my building one morning when I saw a tiny remnant of paper on the floor. It was so insignificant that I had considered just walking past it. After all, it was early and I wanted my coffee. I decided to stop and pick it up and made my way to the restroom to throw it away when one of our key leaders emerged from around the corner. She smiled and commented on how perceptive I was. As you can imagine, I was happy I decided to practice my integrity that morning, even when I didn’t think anyone would notice.

Evaluating Your Integrity

You can conduct a self-assessment of your integrity by asking yourself some fairly simple but straightforward questions.

1. Am I who I say I am?
2. Am I leading by example?
3. Am I honest and true to myself?
4. Am I willing to risk being wrong?
5. Do I take responsibility at all times?
6. Do I listen to the voice of truth that resides within me?
7. Do the decisions I make hold true to the values I embody?
8. Can I be trusted to keep my word when I make a promise or commitment?
9. Do I say what I believe or do I typically say what I expect others need to hear?
10. Do I make decisions based upon my beliefs and convictions or rather, as the situation dictates?

As with the concept of integrity, the questions above are a self-assessment, so be honest with yourself.

The Voice

There is a Voice inside of you
That whispers all day long,
“I feel that this is right for me,
I know that this is wrong.”
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend,
Or wise man can decide
What’s right for you—just listen to
That Voice that speaks inside.
