The Courage to Be Different

Ask anyone who has achieved any measurable level of success and they will likely tell you they had to find the courage to follow their convictions and to embrace the resolve to be different.

Being different separates you from most people. And, while that’s neither a good nor a bad thing, it’s still relevant. It’s relevant because most people have a tough time separating themselves from the wrong people—the influencers who don’t add value to the goals and objectives that personally define what success looks like. That takes courage.

Success, by most measures, is typically identified as the slow and steady progress toward a worthy goal. As vague as the definition may at first seem to be, one thing is certain—most of us clearly recognize success when we see it. We rarely see the struggle, but we always see the results.

We admire the results.

We envy the results.

We judge the results.

We do this because we have no idea whatsoever of the sacrifices and…the courage most successful people had to embrace to get where they are in life.

Confident young attractive woman.

It’s all good though. Because most successful people don’t give a damn about what other people think. It’s what sets them apart. It’s what makes them…different. It's what makes them courageous.

What about you? Are you in pursuit of success? Are you following your convictions so strictly that you’re demonstrating the courage to be different? If so, you already know you’ve had to have to tap into your own source of courage in order to do whatever it takes to achieve and sustain your version of success.

When you follow your convictions, people notice. When people notice, your path becomes abundantly more evident to others (and certainly to you as well) because your success begins to take shape. When that happens, the seeds of your vision take hold and become firmly rooted in your convictions.

The decision to take the first step in your journey demonstrates your courage and is driven by the belief you have in yourself, your ideas, and your motivations. The results reflect a personal transformation, manifested by the courage to follow through and pursue your dreams.

One of my dreams was to be a published writer. I spent nearly three years writing my first manuscript.  In order to accomplish that, I had to have the courage to be different.  I had to become personally different if I were to have any hope of finishing my novel. Writing had to become the priority around which the rest of my life revolved. The decision to write was the easy part. The follow-through and consistency would challenge me from time-to-time. But my convictions and beliefs provided the motivation to push past temporary distractions in order to complete my goal of finishing my first novel. My rewards were always there, patiently waiting just beneath the surface of self-discovery. And those rewards were beyond anything I could have ever imagined.

I began to experience personal growth with each writing session. As an artist, I discovered that I had a gift of being able to see things through the eyes of my characters. Details sprang forth as I typed the words onto the page. I began to see storylines unfolding before me in settings I had never before seen nor imagined. Writing became a personally-satisfying, almost spiritual experience for me. I had, in essence, become a writer!

They say if you want to be a writer then you have to write. Sounds simple enough to apply to most anything I can imagine, really.  If you want to be an artist, then you should probably pick a paintbrush or pencil and then have the courage to start painting or drawing. Want to be a musician? Pick up an instrument…you get the message. My point here is that, if you have a desire to do something new, refreshing, different, unique…then tap into the courage to acknowledge it and demonstrate the determination it’ll take to drive through the obstacles and distractions that will inevitably find their way into the path of your goal. You can do, be, have, or become anything in life, as long as you’re willing to demonstrate the courage it takes to be different.

Until next time...

How to Get Things Done Like the Pros You Admire

There you are, you’re ready to accomplish that long, sought-after goal but you can’t seem to find the time. Motivation can be a tricky thing, especially when it’s complicated by the sheer amount of distractions coming our way from every conceivable angle at any given moment. How on earth can you ever expect to get your “normal” obligations accomplished, let alone find the time to actually accomplish an extraordinary goal or two you have on your list? After all, there are other people out there “doing it”. Why can’t you?

As for motivation, it is fleeting. We generally understand that it either flows from within or is externally-driven. Either way, it is typically powered by the strength of our vision or the urgency of a situation.

Suffice it to say, you can have all the motivation you need, but if you give in to distractions, you will eventually become frustrated (and consumed) by the devastating impact of distractions. In other words, distractions can kill motivation.

So, if it is up to us to keep distractions to a minimum to fuel the motivation we need, what are we to do? How do we find the motivation we need to overcome the urge to give in to distractions that invariably rob us from accomplishing our goals?  For answers, I have come up with three tips that will put things into perspective. As a bonus, I have reached out to two highly-accomplished people I know and trust to gather their perspective. Use their advice in tandem with the tips below and you’ll be plugged into the most powerful source for getting things accomplished—your own motivation!

Attach a Reason to the Task

Nothing is more powerful than the reason you attach to your goals and aspirations. Some call it your “why”. Your reason is the engine to your vision or desire for achievement. Your reason must be compelling enough to fuel the motivation you need to have to consistently accomplish the tasks in spite of the inevitable distractions.

Being motivated about a task doesn’t always mean you’re happy about doing it. It simply means you have the “power” to put distractions at bay and follow through to completion—consistently—to create momentum. Your accomplishments will inevitably lead to satisfaction and happiness, both of which have a sustaining effect on your ability to tap into your determination to repeat the process.

Prioritize, Then Take Action

Taking a step back can provide some much-needed perspective on your goals. It can also overwhelm you. So, it’s wise to approach the accomplishment process realistically. The best way is to break the overall process down into bite-sized tasks, and then, prioritize.

Once you prioritize your tasks, take consistent action (notice a developing trend?) to produce results you can sink your teeth into. Once you begin seeing evidence of your results, you’ll find that your motivation is a lot easier to tap into to continue producing even more results.

Use the 15-Minute Rule

Finding time to accomplish a task, even if it’s routine, can sometimes be an arduous undertaking, especially if you look at the entirety of your desired goal. But if you can “break up” a task into manageable segments that can be accomplished in, say, fifteen-minute increments, then finding time should be less of an issue.

Consistency is the number one fundamental aspect of accomplishment. Without it, achievement is nearly impossible. To produce the consistency—and motivation—required to accomplish your goals and objectives, you must do something related to your goal every-single-day.

You see, our brains are wired in such a way as to form close associations, or familiarity, with what we do consistently. It only makes sense that, the more you do something, the better you become at doing that very thing. The amount of time you spend on a task in a given session is less important than the frequency with which you connect to the task. In other words, even a mere fifteen minutes every day matters more than an eight-hour day once a month.

So, as you approach your next extraordinary goal, take the time to consider these tips along with those of my friends and colleagues below. You’ll be glad you did. And you’ll have a lot greater success in tapping into your own internal motivation source.

Did you know that YOU are actually in charge of your attitude every day? Some days when I'm in a funk, or grumpy, I remind myself that I have the power to shift my energy and attitude at any time. I just have to decide.

One great way to shift is by beginning the day with rituals. Things we do every morning actually set the tone for the way the rest of the day will likely go. So, I thought I’d share a few of the daily rituals that help prepare me for my day.

1.     Gratitude: Before I get out of bed, I think of ten things I am grateful for—from the warm cozy bed to the roof over my head and everything in between. Sounds simple, but simplicity can actually be quite profound.

2.    Personal Development/Meditation: I notice a huge difference in my attitude when I take the time to read or meditate. If you aren't a reader, there are great books you can listen to on audible. I love listening to books while I'm driving. Podcasts are another great option. One of my favorite ones is "The Quote of the Day." Most are no longer than ten minutes long and are a perfect way to program my outlook for the day.

3.     Practice Visualization: Visualization is huge for me because it reminds me of my "why," and motivates me to kick ass because I'm on a mission! You can even break it down and decide how you want your day to go by visualizing the things you’ll get accomplished. Have an important meeting? Visualize the way you want it to go! Seriously, this works. Give it a shot!

I consider time as a construct of the human mind. There is only as much time as we create for ourselves to accomplish a task…or attain our goals, as some would say. This is why people find time to get as much done as they want, while others cannot find the time to do much of anything constructive. It is a truth that time is a concept of our conscious experience, and each of us has the power to create or destroy it, whichever we choose.

I personally, choose to wake up on the weekends a couple of hours before my family. It is my time to freely choose to do whatever I want, which I do. I also get up at 4:30 am every weekday to work out and meditate in order to begin each day on a positive note, which I also freely choose to do. I also take the time to observe, as in the manner in which I observe the moments I put into this text before I sat down to write my thoughts so that it flowed more easily when the opportunity arose. And yes, I chose to do that too.

There are those who embrace conventional wisdom concerning the concept of time, which certainly has its place when considering how you can leverage it to your best advantage. I believe that, once you find the time, you will appreciate both perspectives.

Until next time...

Extraordinary

Extraordinary...

I met an extraordinary man not too long ago who spoke with passion about the course his life is on.  I was attending a business dinner of about twenty people when I met him.  He sat across from me and greeted me with a warm smile and, while looking me in the eye, offered me a firm handshake and told me how he was pleased to finally meet me.  His energy preceded his contagious personality and piqued my curiosity as to just what it was about him that brought him so much joy.

It didn’t take long before I became fully engrossed in listening to him as we engaged in substantive conversation.  The allure of his compassion and positive outlook struck an interesting balance as the rest of the dinner crowd seemed to fade to insignificance.

I knew of Hank Baskett, Sr. about a year before I met him.  I have enjoyed a formal business relationship with his wife, Judy, for quite some time.  Hank and Judy are the parents of former NFL Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver, Hank Baskett, Jr.  Over the course of the past year, I learned of Hank’s bout with Stage IV cancer through Judy.  According to her, he has good days and bad days, as do most stricken with cancer.  I know this all too well, you see, because my daughter Hollie is also battling cancer.

Speaking with Hank during dinner that evening was an experience I won’t soon forget.  He spoke with clarity, conviction, and compassion.  He told me how cancer has positively affected his life in a way that has enhanced his values, his faith, and his perspective.  Meeting with Hank that evening felt as if I had always known him.

Hank and I have similar beliefs on many things.  One of the most significant beliefs we share is the concept of personal choice.  We both believe that our personal choices determine the trajectory of our lives and are largely determined by the attitude with which we fuel those choices.  We can choose to accept negativity and doubt or choose inaction instead of action – all of which decay our ability to live healthy, productive lives.  Or we can instead, make choices that brings health, prosperity, opportunity and added value to our lives and to those around us.

Hank’s story is inspiring, not because he has cancer, but because of the manner in which he has chosen to approach it.  He refuses to allow cancer to control him.  Instead, he controls it through faith, friends, and family as well as with the choices he makes to defeat it.  He tells me that the disease has helped to provide a fresh perspective on his life.  He values every moment he has and doesn’t hesitate to seize an opportunity to share joy, wisdom and positive anecdotes with virtually everyone he meets.

The most profound statement Hank made to me during our discussion was that he thanked God for opening his eyes by “allowing him to carry the disease.”  Wow!  It took me by surprise at first and was actually quite overwhelming to conceive.  But being the deep thinker I tend to be, I eventually understood the essence of his statement.  Hank believes, as I do, that God never gets it wrong.  Instead of making a choice to be miserable and loathed with self-pity, Hank decided to spend some time listening to that still, quiet voice that resides in every one of us.   What he learned by doing so provided a clarity of introspection that has helped him touch lives like mine, my daughter, Hollie, and virtually everyone whom he comes into contact through his contagious sense of joyful purpose and determination.

I’ve mentioned this in previous writings but it bears mentioning again.  The position we occupy in life is largely determined by the choices we make that bring us to where we are.  If you’re happy with where you are, then keep making the kinds of choices that perpetuates your happiness.  If, on the other hand, you’re not completely satisfied with your position or your course, you have only to make different choices or decisions and your circumstances will change.

What is that still, quiet voice telling you?  Do you feel your life is on the correct path?  How do you handle adversity?  Do your choices add value to your life and to those around you?  Are you an inspiration to someone?  Your answers will have a profound impact on the course of your life and what is attracted to you as a result.  We can choose to accept things the way they are as “our lot” or we can choose change!

As dinner wrapped up that evening, I suddenly realized the true impact of Hank’s charisma and genuine nature as I recall not being very judicious about spending any time with the other guests.  Most everyone understood however, as they too had previously enjoyed the pleasure of Hank’s company.

I think we can all take a lesson from Hank and choose to live every day to its fullest, despite our current circumstances.  I choose to continue making adjustments to become better in every conceivable way.  I continue to embrace enthusiasm, education, humility, and consistency.  I will also embrace people like Hank Baskett and the wisdom he imparts that stirs the soul to action through sound decision-making and a joyful approach to life!
