The Courage to Be Different

Ask anyone who has achieved any measurable level of success and they will likely tell you they had to find the courage to follow their convictions and to embrace the resolve to be different.

Clipart of a Man fending off a fire-breathing dragon
Being different separates you from most people. And, while that’s neither a good nor a bad thing, it’s still relevant. It’s relevant because most people have a tough time separating themselves from the wrong people—the influencers who don’t add value to the goals and objectives that personally define what success looks like. That takes courage.

Success, by most measures, is typically identified as the slow and steady progress toward a worthy goal. As vague as the definition may at first seem to be, one thing is certain—most of us clearly recognize success when we see it. We rarely see the struggle, but we always see the results.

We admire the results.

We envy the results.

We judge the results.

We do this because we have no idea whatsoever of the sacrifices and…the courage most successful people had to embrace to get where they are in life.

Confident young attractive woman.

It’s all good though. Because most successful people don’t give a damn about what other people think. It’s what sets them apart. It’s what makes them…different. It's what makes them courageous.

What about you? Are you in pursuit of success? Are you following your convictions so strictly that you’re demonstrating the courage to be different? If so, you already know you’ve had to have to tap into your own source of courage in order to do whatever it takes to achieve and sustain your version of success.

When you follow your convictions, people notice. When people notice, your path becomes abundantly more evident to others (and certainly to you as well) because your success begins to take shape. When that happens, the seeds of your vision take hold and become firmly rooted in your convictions.

The decision to take the first step in your journey demonstrates your courage and is driven by the belief you have in yourself, your ideas, and your motivations. The results reflect a personal transformation, manifested by the courage to follow through and pursue your dreams.

One of my dreams was to be a published writer. I spent nearly three years writing my first manuscript.  In order to accomplish that, I had to have the courage to be different.  I had to become personally different if I were to have any hope of finishing my novel. Writing had to become the priority around which the rest of my life revolved. The decision to write was the easy part. The follow-through and consistency would challenge me from time-to-time. But my convictions and beliefs provided the motivation to push past temporary distractions in order to complete my goal of finishing my first novel. My rewards were always there, patiently waiting just beneath the surface of self-discovery. And those rewards were beyond anything I could have ever imagined.

I began to experience personal growth with each writing session. As an artist, I discovered that I had a gift of being able to see things through the eyes of my characters. Details sprang forth as I typed the words onto the page. I began to see storylines unfolding before me in settings I had never before seen nor imagined. Writing became a personally-satisfying, almost spiritual experience for me. I had, in essence, become a writer!

They say if you want to be a writer then you have to write. Sounds simple enough to apply to most anything I can imagine, really.  If you want to be an artist, then you should probably pick a paintbrush or pencil and then have the courage to start painting or drawing. Want to be a musician? Pick up an instrument…you get the message. My point here is that, if you have a desire to do something new, refreshing, different, unique…then tap into the courage to acknowledge it and demonstrate the determination it’ll take to drive through the obstacles and distractions that will inevitably find their way into the path of your goal. You can do, be, have, or become anything in life, as long as you’re willing to demonstrate the courage it takes to be different.

Until next time...

Rise Above Mediocrity

You want to get to the top but are often frustrated with things that keep getting in the way of your progress. No matter what you do there never seems to be enough time, money, or resources to bring about the changes you seek.

I'm going to share with you one of the most powerful messages I've ever discovered. It made me believe that anything is possible and that whatever success I want to achieve I indeed could achieve it. It would not be without hard work and commitment, but the concept was simple. And I instantly knew it to be true.

They called it a secret. In fact it was literally called "the greatest secret in the world." And that secret is this: The key to success is that you only need to be a small, measurable amount better than mediocrity to be successful.

Wrap your mind around that for just a second. Could that really  be true? In its simplest form, it is. You see, most people happily accept mediocrity. Oh sure, some people will tell you how much they desire to get to the top, but their actions and choices reveal an entirely different version of the words they convey. Invariably, these people give up on the meaningful things they hope to accomplish because of the mediocrity they choose to accept. I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be that way.
OK, so how do we become better and rise above mediocrity? A good place to start is by redefining how we measure ourselves against mediocrity. The term mediocrity can be simply described as the best of the worst and the worst of the best. In other words, it is the equivalent of the status quo—a position or attitude whereby risk is avoided and comfort is essential.

If you are risk averse it doesn't mean you'll never succeed. If your goals and ambitions don't compel you to set aside comfort (or the latest TV show, video game, or distraction) for the sake of your goals it doesn't mean you're a loser. It simply means you're not ready to do what it takes to reach the top. But when you are, these aspects of life must be reconsidered in order to begin to see results.

Are you acting on your desire to reach the top, to become something more, or to achieve an objective? Are you taking action to be even slightly more than mediocre? You already intuitively know what it takes to succeed. To discover the drive within you should find out what it is you are passionate about and act upon it. Does your desire for success compel you more than your desire for acceptance and the status quo? Are you learning at least one new concept or lesson that will propel you beyond mediocrity? Are you using time wisely? How are your actions measured against what you know to be average compared to what you know to be better than average?

Are your goals and objectives clearly defined? This is very important because if you don't know where you're going you will never know when you have arrived. Worse yet, you may never get there without an accurate description of your objective or goal. Have you defined "the top" against your own desires and standards? If you're defining your goals against the standards of others then you are missing the mark and will likely fail.

Are you passionate about your goals? If so, you're well on your way to achieving them. Passion is the catalyst for action. It is the essential ingredient that will help you continue your quest to achieve despite circumstances or obstacles. Passion is what keeps people going when others quit and accept mediocrity. Find something to be passionate about and you will have discovered the secret to success and, more importantly, happiness.

Passion drives determination. Determination describes an attitude that says "I will not quit. I am more than ordinary. I will reach the top." While most people look at their circumstances and decide to retreat, those with determination courageously step forward to scale whatever obstacles they have to, right now, to reach their goals and objectives. They don't wait for "the right time" because the right time is right now!

Master the right skills. Average skills will get you to the middle. Extraordinary skills will get you to the top! Are you proficient in the skills you need to reach the top? If so, you must continue to nurture those skills. If not, you must acquire them. Seek wisdom, knowledge, and abilities that support your passion and you will become a measure better each and every day you make the effort. Your collective improvements will begin to compound and ultimately put you in a category far beyond ordinary and into one that will be extraordinary!

Last, treat people with dignity and respect. No one knows everything but everyone knows something. You cannot get to the top without the help and/or support of others. If you think otherwise, try being a jerk and see how far that gets you. Treating people with respect and dignity will pay huge dividends in winning the hearts and minds of those who may end up helping you to reach the top. We all rely on the expertise of someone who has knowledge or skills we need in order to succeed, whether that expertise comes in the form of a product or service or mentoring or consultation. Never forget that you must be able to work well with others.

You can escape the bonds of mediocrity and realize your ultimate potential if you're willing to look at things differently and begin to take small measured steps to be better today than you were yesterday. It's not as complicated as it may seem.

Until next time!

The Difference Between Power and Leadersip

The Difference Between Power and Leadership...

As we climb the proverbial ladder of success, our influence among those we lead becomes an increasingly important aspect of how we develop as leaders, managers, and supervisors.   Because we have demonstrated the competency to obtain a promotion, an inherent institutional trust is placed in us to lead followers toward common goals or corporate mission objectives.

Promotion is indicative of two things – the fact that we have demonstrated the academic or technical competency required for promotion, and the fact that we possess the potential for increased responsibility and leadership opportunities.  It’s that simple!  But it doesn’t end there.

Good leaders are broadly defined.  However, a common trait among all good leaders is their ability to develop loyal followers to effectively reach goals and corporate objectives.  Good leaders, therefore, possess a proportional blend of traits that project competence, confidence, drive, influence, and compassion.

Every leader acquires a commensurate level of inherent power with each rise in promotion or position.  If used appropriately and in proper proportion, inherent power can be a very useful tool.  Use it indiscriminately, however, and it will inevitably lead to the erosion of loyalty, discontent among followers, and ultimately, to mission failure.  It is therefore unwise to use the inherent power of our position as a primary tool of influence on those whom we lead.

The term, power, is defined as the ability or capacity to perform or act effectively.  This definition captures the essence of how power can be used appropriately to produce a desired outcome.  Let’s face it, sometimes the power of position - inherent power - comes in handy if used with discretion and in proper proportion.  It should be considered primarily as an external means of influence and only as a last resort as an internal method.  It should never be used as a means of self-promotion, intimidation, or assertiveness, as this can result in resentment and subversion by those who will undoubtedly see through such facades.

Most often, your inherent power will be enough of an influence to project itself without any self-assistance whatsoever.  Some make the fatal mistake of “helping” to project inherent power unnecessarily.  This method typically produces unfavorable results as it is seen as an overreach that casts just the opposite effect intended by the sender.  However, when inherent power is delicately blended with personal power, the results can produce amazing results that actually bring people together to form alliances and loyalties that enhance productivity, team dynamics, and achievement.

Personal power is easy to recognize.  Few have it, even fewer know how to effectively employ it.  But it can be learned.   Personal power is developed by the leader who knows how to strike a delicate blend of interpersonal skills and objective vision to effectively solicit willing acceptance among followers.  It becomes particularly important as organizational leadership has become more about collaboration and influence rather than command and control.  To be clear, there are times when inherent power must be used; particularly when the leadership style calls for it (new military recruits, emergencies, on the battlefield, etc.)  As for team or group dynamics however, its generally safe to say that inherent power should rarely, if ever be used as a primary means of leadership influence or goal achievement strategy.

Among the types of personal power, expert power and referent power carry the most influence.

Expert power skirts the edges of inherent power but doesn't quite fit neatly within the confines of that definition.  Expert power belongs to those who have demonstrated an expertise in an area where few, if anyone else on the team or in the organization, possess an aptitude or ability similar in scope, breadth, or depth.  They're generally respected for the knowledge they possess.  As they say, "Knowledge is Power!"

Referent power is generated by a follower who has a high level of respect or admiration for an individual leader and can clearly identify with personality traits, vision, corporate methodology, or leadership style.  Loyalty among those who confer the referent personal power is typically very high.

The lines that differentiate the principles of power and leadership often depend upon the type of power used in conjunction with varying leadership styles.  Some type of power is typically at work in most leadership and management situations.  The key point is to recognize it and effectively employ the blend that works best without subverting the mission or intended goal...or completely losing the buy-in and support of your team.

Remember...leaders lead people!  Don't be the leader who wonders why the team just doesn't seem to work well together without taking the time to conduct a little self-analysis on how YOU are interacting within your group or how YOU are percieved by the team you lead.  A little insight can go a long way to make your life a lot easier!

Until next time!

Momentum

Momentum…

What a fitting word to start with for today’s segment.  It’s actually the first word that dropped into my head.  Yet, I struggle with what follows as I try to establish some kind of momentum with just where the heck this will take us.  I have a feeling I’m going to be one of the recipients of my own lesson this week as I watch the words appear before me.  And that’s okay because it’s times like this that by yielding to my instincts I typically enjoy plausible and effective results.

One of the earliest lessons I learned (and apparently am still learning) is, that in order to establish any kind of momentum, we must begin by taking the first step.  The act of starting or taking that first step can be the most difficult to make.  But as I’m beginning to learn, in doing so, momentum is immediately established and clarity reveals itself.  Notice I didn’t say “speed” is immediately established, but momentum!

Once momentum is established, direction and processes become clearer.  We begin to see things develop as we become familiar with the terrain of our progress appearing before us.  We become involved and begin to realize the idea, initiative, or objective we seek and we begin to see it take shape.  What an awesome feeling that can be!  There will still be inevitable pauses and processes along the way that allow us to reflect and, more often than not, provide the introspection we truly need to recharge – think of it more as an opportunity to make any necessary adjustments or course corrections.  And don’t be discouraged by the pauses because they provide clarity and can often serve to enhance the conviction by which you started the initiative and the drive it takes to continue the momentum.  It certainly beats the alternative of refusing to begin in the first place!

Momentum requires care and feeding.  There is typically no auto pilot associated with momentum.  You remain in complete control of your own momentum as long as you remain engaged in the process.  And that process can be quite exhilarating once a consistent state of momentum is established.  And once you’ve mastered how to control momentum there’s just nothing like it!

Looking back on the momentum of this article I can see, in hindsight, just how quickly my own momentum was established by taking action by trusting my instincts and striking the first few keys.  And so it goes with most things in life.

The value and relevancy of this article has become clearer to me.  I’ve made some adjustments but, for the most part, it’s become easier to shape the more I immerse myself into the process and settle in to the momentum.

I begin with the knowledge that, in order to move forward, it is up to me to make the first move.  Once I demonstrate the courage to make the first move I begin discerning motion and direction and can easily make adjustments as ideas, obstacles, and the path ahead is revealed to me.  I can honestly tell you this – if you’re looking for answers or changes in your life, those answers or changes will not come until you demonstrate the courage and conviction that trigger them.  In other words, you need to take action and BEGIN!

There’s a pace that’s been established as I’ve been blasting through the words trying to catch up with the ideas flowing in my mind today.  I liken it to a skier who has settled into the rhythm of an awesome downhill run.  The skier cannot always see the finish line when they begin.  But they know they’ll never get there if they don’t make that first push from the top and begin the journey.  They do have a clear objective in mind that drives them to “pull the trigger” and demonstrate the courage it takes for the process to begin.  Make no mistake, it is a process.  I say that because you should be encouraged to know that once you begin the process of momentum, things will be revealed to you that will get you to your desired outcome or objective!

What answers are you looking for?  Where is it that you desire to go?  Are you ready to take the first step and create the momentum that’ll reveal the path to get there?

I’m truly interested in knowing if any of this makes sense to you or serves you as well as it has me.  Take the time to drop me a note or leave a comment.  Your comments help me as much as I hope mine help you.

Take the first step and establish your own momentum today!

Dreams...

Dreams, Vision, Introspection...and Courage!

Ask anyone who has achieved a level of success and they will tell you they had the courage to follow their convictions and were not afraid to be different.  Success, by most measures, is typically identified as something that's fairly difficult to come by or unique in some form or fashion.  As vague as the definition may be, one thing is certain - most of us clearly recognize success when we see it.

Got a goal?  Are you in pursuit of success?  Demonstrate the courage to be different!

When you follow your convictions, people notice.  When people notice, your path becomes better defined and begins to take shape.  As that happens, the seeds of your vision take hold and become rooted in those very convictions.  The decision to take the first step demonstrates your courage and is driven by the belief you have in yourself, your ideas, and your motivations.  The result is a personal transformation, manifested by the courage to follow through and pursue your dreams.

One of my dreams is to be a published writer.  I spent nearly three years writing my first manuscript.  In order to accomplish that, I had to have the courage to be different.  I had to become personally different if I were to have any hope of finishing my novel.  Writing had to become the priority around which the rest of my life revolved.  The decision to write was the easy part.  The follow-through would challenge me from time-to-time.  But my convictions and beliefs provided the impetus to push past temporary distractions in order to complete my goal of finishing the novel.  My rewards lie just beneath the surface of self-discovery and were beyond even what I could have ever imagined them to be.

I experienced personal growth the moment I began writing that continued to expand my imagination with each session.   I discovered that I had an ability to see things through the eyes of my characters and to effectively articulate the essence of an ensuing novel.  Details sprang forth as I feverishly typed them onto the page.  I witnessed story lines unfolding before me in settings I had never before seen or imagined.  Writing became a personally-satisfying, almost spiritual experience for me.  I had, in essence, become a writer!

I began to truly discover writing when encouraged to do so by my fiance.  I spoke to her often about my dreams.  I tend to dream lucidly and reportedly seemed to have a lot to “say” while sleeping.  Those dreams became the basis and served as a beginning to what has become a passion for me to principally write about.  With her support, encouragement, and understanding, I embarked on a journey that took all of the elements of passion, desire, creativity, organization, and the willingness to be different to determine if I had what it takes to be a writer.

They say if you want to be a writer, then you have to write!  Sounds simple enough to apply to most anything I can imagine, really.  If you want to be an artist, then you should probably pick a paintbrush or pencil.  Want to be a musician?  Pick up an instrument…you see the parallel, I’m sure.  My point here is that, if you have a desire to do something new, refreshing, different, unique…then have the courage to acknowledge it and be ready to demonstrate the courage it takes to drive through the obstacles and distractions that will inevitably find their way into the path of your goal.  The alternative is to do nothing but resolve to observe the success of others.

What lies just beneath the surface of your self-discovery?  For me, it was an unknown passion for creative writing.  For you it could be much, much more.  Open the window of your mind and take a look at the true desires of your heart.  Don’t be too quick to discount things that cross the thought paths because they can provide important insight on something you may not have thought about before.

Be ready to demonstrate the courage it’ll take to place your desires above what used to be “ordinary life.”  I can assure you, your courage will pay huge dividends and result in a life far from ordinary!  Instead, get ready for extraordinary!

Until next time...
